The Studio
What is Pilates? It is a method of fitness developed by Joseph H. Pilates over 80 years ago. His goal was to teach people how to achieve “true health” which he defined as a uniformly developed body, well-balanced in mind, body and spirit. Inspired by Eastern and Western forms of exercise, Pilates incorporated the best of both worlds to come up with a completely new method of fitness originally known as Contrology. Along with a series of choreographed movements taught as mat work or on spring-based equipment, Pilates also taught proper breathing as a way to nourish the body, eliminate waste through exhalation, maximize blood flow, and increase stamina making the body more alert and alive.
Pilates also challenges the mind, requiring concentration and awareness in order to achieve the small details held within each exercise while being able to maintain an overall awareness. Some of the benefits obtained, to name a few, are uniform development of the body, proper breathing, strengthening the “core”, increased flexibility, relief of low back pain, long lean muscles, decompressed joints and spine, and improved posture. But to experience this method of fitness in your own body will speak more than any explanation you will read anywhere. You will feel alert, energized and full of vitality!
